Can anybody answer my question about tapestry crochet?

i have a few questions. i've only tried tapestry crochet once. is there a certain size hook to use? when i did it i could see the yarn through the stitches. if you want to work with say 4 colors, do you carry all 3 colors, or join at diff. time? does anybody have simple patters i could use?
