How does one live off grid with out using the monetary system,?

without a job, without living off of the government but just off the land like they use to do? Or has the government have everything so tied up you can not do that anymore? Has a lot of our freedoms been taken away that deals with living our own lives? They are making it a law that we have health care, and making laws to keep people from surviving off the land. How can one live that does not buy into the system nor promotes the monetary system in anyway?
