Why was George Bush elected again in 2004? How come John Kerry didn't make much of an effort to attack Bush?

Yes I am aware that George Bush's presidency is almost over, and I am stoked about that, I can't wait until January 20th, 2009, but still, how come nobody in 2004 was able to see that electing George Bush again for a 2nd term would be a huge mistake, how come nobody saw it coming? How come John Kerry didn't get a lot of votes from Democrats? Overall, seriously, why did so many people vote for George Bush again in 2004? Because of this, our economy is a mess, almost 5,000 U.S. troops have died, he has ruined the reputation of the United States around the world. Seriously, why did George Bush have the advantage over John Kerry in 2004?
